Track of the Week

14 07 2006

I hope you’ve all had a good week? Still, Friday now, so whatever the excuse it is time to let go and do what you do when you’re not doing what you’re otherwise normally doing. I think you get the message. So, track of the week time. This artist is, to me, the epitome of alternative emceeing and alternative hip-hop. His style is pretty much like no other. I’m referring to Aesop Rock, and in particular the track Daylight

This track has a fantastic melody – great use of instruments and samples, something often lacking in hip-hop. What can I say about Aesop’s lyrics and vocals?! Surely one of the best emcees out there?! When words emerge from his mouth, they don’t simply fall out from between his lips, they are fired as if from a cannon at high velocity – like shards of lyrical glass hitting the airwaves with grace.

Aesop Rock is signed to the popular underground label Def Jux and since 99 he has worked with artists such as; Blockhead, El-P, and Mr. Lif. His album Labor Days (of which Daylight was originally from) won critical acclaim for its originality and use of storytelling and thus the subject matter. To date Aesop has released three full albums on Def Jux and apparently has another one in the works as we speak.

Although most hip-hop heads will already know about Aesop Rock, it is worth mentioning that often non-hip-hop fans seem to be attracted to his music – so if you normally give the genre a wide-birth, maybe spare five minutes to give Aesop Rock some of your time. Check him out at the Def Jux website and also on MySpace.

Definately one of his better songs. The beat is nice and chilled out, he definately has a unique flow. Labour Days is his best album, that I’ve heard, and I’ve only heard Labour and Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives.

Labor Days is indeed excellent, and I’d have to agree that Daylight is one of his better songs, hence the feature!

Cheers for leaving a comment. :-)

This Aesop track is made up of elements that set it apart from a lot of hip-hop, although he needs to upgrade his drum-machine, poor!

Maybe YOU need to upgrade your drum machine? Think on.
